Well, wonder no more…

Which supermarket is cheaper in Australia?

A government-funded report by CHOICE has revealed the cheapest supermarket to get groceries at in Australia: Aldi.

Released on September 26, 2024, CHOICE’s price analysis between Aldi, Woolworths, Coles and IGA was based on a basket of 14 commonly bought grocery items – including milk, bread, sugar, pasta and tea bags and two fresh fruits and vegetables.

And for all 14 items, Aldi charged $50.79; significantly cheaper than its competitors.

Coles came in second place, charging $66.22 for the 14 items, while Woolworths charged $68.37 and IGA charged $78.95.

However, these totals included specials.

As CHOICE pointed out in the report, “Buying items on special can make a significant difference to overall grocery costs, underlining the benefits of shopping around.”

If the specials were taken out, Aldi would still be the cheapest but Woolworths would slide into second place (Coles had a special on tea bags when the analysis took place).

Where is the cheapest place to shop groceries?

As aforementioned, out of the big chain supermarkets in Australia, Aldi is cheapest for groceries.

However, you should definitely do your own research in your local area.

For example, I fortunately live very close to a butcher and an independent grocer and recently discovered, after doing price comparisons and a bit of math, that meat and fresh produce were way cheaper!

So have a look at the prices at your local butcher and grocer. Or check out the prices at a farmers market; find your closest Farmers’ Market here.

And, as aforementioned, just shop around – keep an eye out for Aldi, Woolworths, Coles and IGA’s weekly specials and buy in bulk when and if you can.
