It’s a new month in the lunar cycle, which means another full moon is coming around. In April, that full moon is called the “Pink Full Moon”.
Sounds delicious, let’s dive into it.
When will the Pink Full Moon happen in Australia?
According to Time and Date, the moon will reach its peak on Thursday, 2 April 2025. You can find specific times when it will peak in your area here.
It’s set to hit its peak at 1.12 pm AEDT. Lunchtime isn’t the best for Moon gazing, but it will still be quite full the night before and the night after.
Why is it called the Pink Full Moon?
Despite what the name suggests, it is not pink or red in colour. Like the Flower Full Moon in May, its name actually derives from nature and agricultural practices.
Its name comes from spring wildflowers or phlox, which bloom all across the northern hemisphere at this time.

The term comes from early Native American and Colonial American traditions, which named each Full Moon after what was happening in nature at that time of year. The April Full Moon was linked to the blooming of a wildflower called creeping phlox (also known as moss pink), which spreads in bright pink carpets across parts of North America in spring.
This naming tradition was later adopted by European settlers and has been passed down through generations. However, it’s not the only name for the full moon at this time.
Other names for the Pink Full Moon
While “Pink Moon” is the most widely used name today, it’s just one of many seasonal names April’s Full Moon has. Most of them are rooted in observations of nature, agriculture and animal behaviour in the Northern Hemisphere.
One name is “Sprouting Grass Moon”, which, as the name suggests, refers to the grass starting to sprout after winter. Another name is “Egg Moon” which is strongly associated with fertility, new life and rebirth — themes that also align with springtime and Easter traditions. Hence, chocolate Easter eggs!
The other alternate name is “Fish Moon” which is linked to fishing migrations in the Northern Hemisphere.

How to see the Pink Full Moon?
The full moon always appears at its best just after sunset. Even if the exact “full” moment happens during the day, the Moon will look full the night before and the night after as well.
Aim for moonrise, when it’s low on the horizon, that’s when it appears larger and more golden.
Find a spot with a clear view of the eastern horizon (that’s where the Moon rises). Opt for a beach or a hilltop, somewhere which offers unobstructed views and is without too much artificial light.
Can a full moon affect you?
Opinions differ when it comes to how the moon can affect you. Some studies (e.g. a 2013 study published in Current Biology) suggest people may sleep less deeply or take longer to fall asleep during a full moon, even in controlled conditions without visible moonlight.
People often describe feeling more restless, anxious, or emotionally charged during a full moon. This may be due to the moon’s symbolic associations with intuition, reflection, and release. It is where we get the term “lunacy” from.
In astrology and some spiritual traditions, the full moon is seen as a powerful energetic peak. It is a time of culmination, ideal for manifesting intentions, letting go, or celebrating achievements.
