Buffy reboot has been slayed: Will it rise from the dead?

Put away your wooden stakes and disassemble your Scooby Gang; the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is officially over, before it even began.

In May 2025, Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed that she was set to reprise her iconic titular role.

However, on 15 March 2026, Sarah Michelle Gellar took to Instagram to confirm that the project was dead.

“Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale,” Sarah said in her video. She thanked Chloe Zhao for bringing Buffy back into her life, along with her “stylish yet affordable boots.”

“If the apocalypse comes… You can still beep me.”

However, Deadline reports that Hulu is still keen on the Buffy IP. So even if they aren’t moving forward with this iteration, that doesn’t mean we won’t get something in the Buffyverse in the future.

Rumours of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot started swirling in February 2025.

“Sources say that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in final talks to once again play the iconic title character in the untitled project, although it would focus on a new Slayer and Gellar would appear in a recurring role rather than leading the series,” Variety reported at the time.

Sarah Michelle shared a snap of the first table read of the script of the Buffy reboot.

She redacted the title, but in the post, she shared a cute small Buffy Summers action figure and captioned the post “Baby steps”.

Ryan Kiera Armstrong was cast as the new Slayer. Sarah Michelle announced the news on Instagram, writing:

“From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side. To have that kind of emotional intelligence and talent at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.”

Ryan has previously starred in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, and had minor roles in American Horror Story, Black Widow and It: Chapter Two.
