Meet the family behind Irish actor Colin Farrell

The Oscar-nominated actor is a family man at heart.

Colin Farrell has long been one of Hollywood’s most charismatic leading men, but his recent run of acclaimed roles – from his haunting turn in The Banshees of Inisherin to his scene-stealing and unrecognisable transformation as the Penguin in The Batman – has reminded audiences why he remains such a magnetic screen presence.

Behind the cameras, though, Colin is far removed from the glamorous stereotype. Here’s a deeper dive into the Irish actor’s strong family ties.

Where is Colin Farrell from?

Colin is from Castleknock, Dublin, Ireland. He was born in Dublin in 1976 and grew up in a close-knit Irish family with his parents Rita and Eamon and three siblings. His sister Claudine also works as his personal assistant. Rita has frequently been Colin’s red carpet companion, joining him for Oscar nights and premieres throughout his career.

Rita and Eamon separated and divorced after raising their four children. They later remarried. Rita married producer Joel B. Michaels in Colin’s L.A. home. Eamon wed Eileen Pollard in 2016.

His father, Eamon, sadly passed away in April 2025 after a long illness. Along with other notable names like Cillian Murphy and Bono, Colin once wrote a poem for his father for a charity book called Sons+Fathers for the Irish Hospice Foundation.

Did Colin ever marry?

Famously, the Irish heartthrob has never married. However, he has had a couple of high-profile relationships over the years.

He was in a relationship with English singer and actor Amelia Warner from July to November 2001. He was then romantically tied to Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie, Elizabeth Taylor, Maeve Quinlan and Demi Moore.

Colin’s first son, James Padraig Farrell, was born to American model Kim Bordenave in 2003.

The Irish actor dated then medical student Muireann McDonnell from 2007 to 2008, and many speculated in Ireland that he would settle down with the Irishwoman. However, they unfortunately broke up. He was then in a relationship for over a year with British American writer Emma Forrest, which she delved into in her memoir Your Voice in My Head.

Colin’s second son was born in October 2009 to Polish actress Alicja Bachleda-Curuś (his Ondine co-star). They split in 2010.

Currently, Colin is not in a public relationship and has focused on his sons and family life.

Does Colin Farrell have children?

Yes, as aforementioned, Colin has two sons, James and Henry, from previous relationships.

His first son, James Padraig Farrell, was born on 12 September 2003, to American model Kim Bordenave. His second son, Henry Tadeusz Farrell, was born to Alicja Bachleda-Curuś on 7 October 2009.

Colin has said that becoming a father was a turning point for his sobriety. He has been sober since 2006.

What is Angelman Syndrome, the condition that Colin’s son has?

In October 2007, Colin revealed that James has Angelman syndrome. It is a rare genetic disorder that affects around one in 15,000 people worldwide. It typically leads to developmental delays, little or no speech, challenges with movement and balance, and in many cases, seizures. Those with Angelman syndrome often have a distinctive, joyful personality marked by frequent laughter and smiling. Supportive therapies such as physiotherapy, speech assistance, and specialised education can greatly improve quality of life.

Colin has been vocal about his son’s condition and launched a foundation to support those with intellectual disabilities. Especially for those who age out of systems designed for minors.

He opened up about his son and the Colin Farrell Foundation in an exclusive interview with People. “[I] wanted to do something in the realm of providing greater opportunities for families who have a child with special needs, to receive the support that they deserve, basically the assistance in all areas of life.”

“I want the world to be kind to James,” he famously said in that interview. “I’m proud of him every day, because I just think he’s magic.”

“Once your child turns 21, they’re kind of on their own,” Colin explained about “ageing out” of systems. “All the safeguards that are put in place, special ed classes, that all goes away, so you’re left with a young adult who should be an integrated part of our modern society and more often than not is left behind.”

In 2025, Colin revealed that he and James’ mother made the difficult decision to place James in full-time care in case anything happens to them.

“It’s tricky – some parents will say, ‘I want to take care of my child myself’, and I respect that,” Colin said to Candis Magazine. “But my horror would be, what if I have a heart attack tomorrow, and, God forbid, James’s mother, Kim, has a car crash and she’s taken too – and then James is on his own?”
