When Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness announced they were separating after 27 years of marriage on September 16, 2023, , it sent shockwaves through their fanbase.
They had been married for 27 years, after all.
After meeting on the set of the Australian miniseries Correlli in 1995, Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness had quickly entered a relationship.
The couple then wed on April 11, 1996, in Toorak, Victoria. Of course, shortly after they tied the knot, Hugh’s career took off (namely thanks to Wolverine, The Boy from Oz and Kate & Leopold) and he was catapulted to international stardom.
And he always had Deborra lovingly by his side… Until now.
In a statement exclusively shared with PEOPLE, they said:
“We have been blessed to share almost 3 decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.
“Our family has been and always will be our highest priority. We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness. We greatly appreciate your understanding in respecting our privacy as our family navigates this transition in all of our lives.
“This is the sole statement either of us will make.”

The 2023 Met Gala, held on May 1, 2023, was Hugh and Deborra’s second last public appearance before their split. The last was when they attended the Wimbledon men’s final together in July.
