Jimmy Barnes recently opened up about his health condition and how, as he approaches 70, he’s heading into “the best years of my life.”
After surviving open-heart surgery and facing what he thought might be his final days, Jimmy Barnes is back on stage — and not slowing down. “I think I’m invincible,” he told 7NEWS. “I think I’ll be performing until I drop.”
Now on his first solo tour since the life-saving operation, Jimmy Barnes is also hosting a special show to thank the surgeons and nurses who pulled him through. “They saved my life. I’m forever grateful,” he said.
Reflecting on the scare, he added, “I turned to Jane and said: ‘I think this might be it.’” But it wasn’t and he is now recovering well and back on stage.
Hip surgery in August
Taking to Instagram on August 4, the singer shared that he was once again in the hospital due to severe hip pain.
“I had a twinge in my hip when I was leaving Dunedin on Thursday morning, and by late last night the pain was unbearable, so I went off to hospital,” Jimmy wrote.
“The doctors have recommended a remedial medical procedure ASAP followed by some physio to address the issue. These doctors don’t muck around! Providing all goes to plan, I’m expected to make a full recovery in six weeks.”

Thankfully, this morning (August 5), Jimmy’s wife Jane Barnes shared a positive update.
“Jimmy is out of ICU and recovering well,” she wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of Jimmy enjoying some chicken soup.
As a result of the recent hip pain, Jimmy has had to postpone several of his upcoming shows.
“I hate to let anyone down, but I’m also never going to compromise the quality of my gigs. I apologise for the inconvenience this will cause everyone – I HATE moving shows! – but thank you for understanding,” Jimmy said.
This isn’t the first time the former Cold Chisel frontman has had issues with his hip or cancel shows as a result.

In late 2022, Jimmy cancelled his summer tour to have a hip replacement.
At the time, he candidly shared that the replacement came about because he was suffering from excruciating pain when performing and said the damage in his hip had been caused by “jumping off PA’s and stomping around stages for nearly 50 years.”
Jimmy was supposed to embark on his first tour since undergoing emergency open heart surgery in December 2023 in just two weeks time; but these are the shows that will now be postponed because of his recent hospitalisation.
Ticket holders will be contacted with further information in the coming days once new plans have been made.
