Sex and the City, despite ending nine years ago, is still one of the most popular television shows around.
The series — which stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis and Kim Cattrall — lasted for an impressive six seasons. It also spawned two films and a sequel series: And Just Like That.
At the centre of the Sex and the City franchise is Carrie Bradshaw, a fashionable columnist looking for love. Kristin — who went on to play Charlotte York in the series — was initially asked to audition for Carrie.

In the inaugural episode of Kristin’s new podcast, Are You a Charlotte?, she revealed the surprising news.
“I got this script from Darren [Star, series creator] and it had a little note from him, and it said, ‘Kristin, I really want you to read this and [audition] for the part of Carrie,’” Kristin shared.
“And Carrie is very clearly the main part and she’s described as having the body of Heather Locklear and the mind of Dorothy Parker. And I was like, ‘What?! I can’t do that!’ So I was stressing,” she continued.
“I thought to myself, ‘I can’t possibly pull this off!’”

Kristin then added that she was drawn to another character in the script for Sex and the City’s pilot.
“I liked this other girl, Charlotte! There was not a lot on the page, but it was very clear that she had a different point of view than the other girls. That she was more focused on relationships and love… I just felt like she was more hopeful and open than the other characters, which at the time I related to a lot,” she said.
“So, I was like, ‘Darren, Darren, I can’t possibly play that part.’ I think I called him and said, ‘I can’t play Carrie, I don’t even know what you’re thinking, but I could play this other girl; I want to play this other girl.’”
Kristin went on to say that Darren agreed to let her come and audition for Charlotte rather than Carrie… And obviously, the rest is history.
