Rukirabasaija Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, more commonly known as King Oyo of Tooro, was the Omukama (King) of the Tooro Kingdom, a Bantu kingdom in western Uganda. He passed away on 27 August 2026 at the age of 34.
He was born on April 16, 1992, to King Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III and Queen Mother Best Kemigisa. When his father died in 1995, Oyo inherited the throne at just three years old. His ascension made him the world’s youngest reigning monarch. However, he didn’t have his official coronation until he turned 18 years old.
Despite his title, the Tooro Kingdom is a traditional or cultural institution. Uganda is a republic governed by a President (currently Yoweri Museveni). The Tooro monarch has no political power; instead, the role is largely ceremonial. During his reign, Oyo became involved in youth empowerment, education, healthcare, environmental conservation and tourism, and was also a prominent supporter of football in Uganda.
News of the King’s illness came as a surprise to many Ugandans. Rumours circulated on social media that the monarch was ill, but it wasn’t until the day of his death that the kingdom’s prime minister (or Omuhikirwa), Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, confirmed the news and called for prayers.
“This is to inform you that His Majesty King Oyo is currently in critical condition,” the Omuhikirwa wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “At this difficult and deeply concerning time, we humbly ask the people of Tooro, our friends and well-wishers in Uganda and across the world to keep His Majesty in their thoughts and prayers.”
The Tooro Kingdom confirmed that King Oyo died in the United States on August 27, 2026, aged 34, in a statement.
“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who passed away at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, 27 August 2026.”
He was undergoing treatment for an aggressive form of cancer.
“I call upon all the people of Tooro to remain united, calm and prayerful during this profoundly difficult time,” he continued. “The continuity of the Crown is assured. His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom.”
His body was returned to Uganda on September 4, where President Museveni and other dignitaries received it. Uganda has entered a period of mourning, with his burial scheduled for September 12 in Tooro.
However, his death has sparked a curious succession question. Although the Omuhikirwa shared that Oyo had a son and therefore has an heir, members of the royal family have said they were not aware of a biological son. Instead, they are calling for the succession to be determined according to Tooro’s traditional processes, which include a mock battle and ceremonies testing royal lineage.
“The King had no child,” said Charles Kayondo Kamurasi, the head of the Babiito royal clan. “Moreover, [the Omuhikirwa] has no right or power to make such an announcement because he is not a member of the royal family.”
