Everything you need to know about glycation (and what it means for your skin)

Plus, the products that help stop it in its tracks.

Growing older goes hand in hand with a lot of things: gaining more wisdom and life experience, watching your children grow and become their own people, and advancing your careers to a stage where you can have a positive impact on those around you.

There are, of course, some physical changes as well, like those smile lines from many years of happy memories, or perhaps the creeping in of fine lines and wrinkles as your body’s natural production of collagen begins to slow.

You may also notice another process that takes place as you age, which can have an effect on the look, feel and firmness of your skin: glycation.

The completely natural process isn’t a new kid on the block, but a new generation of skincare products have been specifically formulated to fight the process and even help reverse some of the signs of visible ageing.

What is glycation?

A natural part of ageing, glycation occurs when excess sugars bind to proteins, like collagen and elastin, in our skin.

This binding produces harmful molecules, known as advanced glycation end-products (A.G.E.), which accumulate over time to weaken proteins.

These end-products reduce the ability of these proteins to function normally (i.e., keep skin firm and flexible) with the body unable to break them down and replace them. This can make the visible signs of ageing—like fine lines, wrinkles and a loss of firmness—more apparent.

This process typically begins in our mid-20s when our body’s natural collagen production also begins to slow. A major factor in the visible signs of ageing, fighting glycation goes a long way to achieving firmer, more plump and more radiant skin.

How can you protect against glycation?

The key to fighting glycation? Interrupting the process with skincare products that target A.G.E.’s and smooth visible wrinkles, restore firmness and enhance skin’s radiance.

Backed by 15 years of glycation expertise, SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Interrupter Advanced is a corrective cream that improves the accelerated signs of ageing impacted by A.G.E.’s.

An update on its beloved predecessor, the advanced formula goes beyond the role of traditional anti-ageing products by not only protecting against collagen glycation at every stage, but also optimising collagen integrity.

SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Interrupter Advanced, $274.

It clinically increases dermal thickness and density while supporting a greater reduction of skin creping and thinning, and comforts dry, ageing skin by reducing the inflammatory response caused by A.G.E. formation.

Ingredients that protect and support

The breakthrough corrective cream contains 18 per cent more active Proxylane, a patented molecule derived from beech wood that helps support the skin’s matrix and restores water to the skin. It also contains a concentrated flavonoid blend including blueberry extract, which is both an antioxidant and anti-glycation ingredient that helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and laxity.

The SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Interrupter Advanced formula also contains three per cent HEPES, or sulfonic acid, that activates the skin’s natural enzymes to help break the bonds that bind dead skin cells to the surface for even exfoliation, and one per cent niacinamide to strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier.

For best results, massage a thin, even layer of the concentrated anti-wrinkle cream onto the entire face, neck and chest. If using in the morning, use after a protective vitamin C antioxidant serum and before sunscreen, and after retinol application when used as part of a nighttime routine.
