The first trailer has dropped for the upcoming Kangaroo movie and it’s giving us all the feels. Cute baby joeys, incredible outback scenes, a star-studded Aussie and Kiwi cast and a big dose of humour to boot make this seem like a sure-fire hit when it makes its way to cinemas. Ahead of that time, here’s everything we know about the film so far …

What is the story behind the movie Kangaroo?
If you’ve heard about the incredible Kangaroo Sanctuary founded by Chris ‘Brolga’ Barn or seen BBC documentary Kangaroo Dundee, the story may already be a little familiar. The Kangaroo movie is inspired by the work Chris and – who started the 188-acre sanctuary for rescued orphaned baby kangaroos and adult kangaroos back in 2011 – and his wife Tahnee do in Central Australia.
With the hit team who brought us Paddington at the helm, Kangaroo is a family comedy about an unlikely duo who pair up in the Outback and begin a quest to help rescue and rehabilitate orphaned joeys in a remote town on the outskirts of Alice Springs.
Former weatherman Chris Masterman (played by Ryan Corr) is on his way to Broome when a car accident sees him cross paths with local Indigenous Australian girl Charlie (played by newcomer Lily Whiteley). Together, they work to save a baby joey – and both their lives are irrevocably changed as a result.

Who stars in Kangaroo?
The cast includes some of Australia and New Zealand’s favourite actors – along with a few new faces, including:
- Ryan Corr (Packed to the Rafters, The Water Diviner, House of the Dragon) plays Chris Masterman.
- Lily Whiteley plays Charlie. The newcomer, who hails from Queensland, was found amongst the over 300 hopefuls who auditioned for the role.
- Deborah Mailman (Last Days of the Space Age, Offspring) plays Rosie, Charlie’s mum.

- Wayne Blair (Redfern Now, Total Control) plays Ralph.
- Trisha Morton-Thomas (Redfern Now, Ten Pound Poms) is Gwennie, Charlie’s grandmother.
- Rachel House (Our Flag Means Death, Heartbreak High) plays Jesse.
- Brooke Satchwell (Mr Inbetween, The Twelve) plays Liz.
- Ernie Dingo (Mystery Road, Squinters) plays Uncle Dave.
- Rick Donald (Wentworth, 800 Words) plays Trap.
- Roy Billing (Jack Irish, Never Too Late) plays Murray.

Where was Kangaroo filmed?
Prepare for stunning locations shots! Kangaroo was set and filmed in Alice Springs (Mparntwe), on Arrernte Country, and at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach. These are the traditional land and waters of the Bidjigal, Birrabirragal and Gadigal Peoples.
