Born to Alfred Roy Carey and Patricia Carey (née Hickey) in 1969, Mariah has been rather candid about her ‘tough’ upbringing over the years.
Mariah once shared that she had no contact with her maternal grandparents because they disowned Patricia for marrying a black man.
She then grew up away from her father once he and Patricia divorced in 1973.

Yes, Mariah has one sister and one brother; she is the youngest of the three.
Morgan, Mariah’s brother, was born in 1960 and Alison, Mariah’s sister, was born in 1963.
Mariah was never particularly close with her siblings; in her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer alleged that Morgan was violent with their parents while growing up and that Alison struggled with drug addiction.
Both Morgan and Alison sued Mariah after the release of the memoir. Alison sued for “intentional infliction of immense emotional distress” and Morgan sued for defamation.
Sadly, Alison passed away in August 2024, coincidentally on the exact same day her and Mariah’s mother Patricia passed away.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” Mariah said in a statement, first shared with People on August 26, 2024.

She first wed Tommy Mottola in 1993. The couple separated in 1996 and divorced in 1998.
