Prince Frederik passes away at the age of 22; March 2025

On March 10, 2025, the news broke of the tragic passing of Prince Frederik of Luxembourg from a rare genetic condition, PoLG mitochondrial disease.

He was the youngest son of Prince Robert of Luxembourg and Princess Julie of Nassau. Though not directly in line for the throne, he was part of the extended royal family. His father, Prince Robert, is a cousin of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, the current head of state.

Frederik had campaigned almost his entire life for more research into the condition; he was diagnosed with the condition at 14 years of age. In fact, he founded the POLG Foundation in 2022 to promote research and seek a cure. He acted as the Creative Director for the foundation.

Despite his illness, he maintained a positive spirit and worked tirelessly to raise awareness, collaborating with designer Donna Karan to create a clothing line and participating in medical trials to aid research.

His father, Prince Robert, shared the sad news with a statement on the foundation’s website, writing that his son had passed away on March 1, 2025, in Paris, France:

“Last Friday, February 28th, on “Rare Disease Day”, our beloved son called us in to his room to speak to him for one last time. Frederik found the strength and the courage to say goodbye to each of us in turn… After gifting each of us with our farewells – some kind, some wise, some instructive – in true Frederik fashion, he left us collectively with a final long-standing family joke. Even in his last moments, his humour, and his boundless compassion, compelled him to leave us with one last laugh….to cheer us all up.”

In three short years, Prince Frederik accomplished so much at his foundation. Through his dedication, Frederik’s initiatives raised over $3.6 million, funding four major research projects aimed at finding effective treatments and a cure for POLG-related disorders.
