Queen Mary of Denmark’s life is like something straight out of a fairytale.

The 52-year-old grew up in Tasmania, Australia and in her 20s, began working in marketing and advertising.

Then, during a chance encounter at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, Mary met Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark. The royal was instantly besotted with Mary, so the two started dating. They were engaged in 2003.

Following their engagement, Mary and Frederik tied the knot on May 14, 2004, and she became the Crown Princess. Not only this, but following Queen Margrethe’s abdication, Mary and Frederik were crowned as King and Queen of Denmark in early January 2024.

Deep indigo look

April 30, 2025

Her Majesty, Queen Mary, wore a deep purple-indigo blouse with a high neck, tie back and puffy sleeves to attend the opening of the exhibition ‘Danner af Danmark’ on April 30, 2025, at Frederiksborg Castle. She completed the look with a full black maxi skirt, black sling-back heels, and a purple clutch.

The exhibition tells the story of Countess Danner (Grevinne Danner). Formerly Louise Rasmussen, the Countess was a commoner, ballet dancer and stage actor who married King Frederik VII of Denmark. Their marriage actually took place at Kreferiksborg Castle Church, and the couple lived there until 1859 when it burned down.

Her story clearly resonates with Queen Mary, who also appeared in a video to promote the exhibition:

Fabulous in Florals

March 31, 2025

Queen Mary lived up to her fashion reputation while on a state visit to France. King Frederik and Queen Mary were on a three-day state visit to the country. She arrived in a stunning Dior number (a nod to the iconic French fashion house). We adore this floral outfit she wore to visit the Élysée Palace for a gala dinner.

She honoured both her home country of Australia and her adopted kingdom of Denmark with this gorgeous ensemble. The high-necked blouse with delicate lace appliqué is from Melbourne designer CLEA. She paired it with a stunning floral full-length skirt from Danish brand Lasse Spangenberg.

Once again, Her Majesty opted to re-wear a signature favourite, a blue Julie Fagerholt gown. However, many eyes were on the diamond brooch in the centre of her chest.

Previously owned by Queen Josefina of Sweden and Norway, the jewel made its way to Mary’s mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe. The former monarch was known to be quite fond of the brooch set and wore them often. Reserved purely for Queens, Mary can now wear the jewel with pride.
