Following a private family trip to Australia to mark the death of her father, Queen Mary and King Frederik returned to Denmark in early October. On 6 October, the two monarchs, plus Princess Benedikte, attended the official Opening of Folketinget, the Danish parliament, at Christiansborg Palace.
Queen Mary was filmed singing the national anthem of her adopted country from the balcony.
While King Frederik and Queen Mary were in Australia, their son Crown Prince Christian acted as regent. He has played this role before at various times, great practice for when the young prince will one day be king!

King Frederik and Queen Mary officially marked the end of their 2026 sailing season this week as they disembarked the Royal Yacht Dannebrog.
Keeping to tradition, the royal couple greeted recruits of the Royal Guard who had served aboard the yacht during the summer.
Her Majesty even stopped to wave at a group of Australian tourists watching the formalities.
The Danish Royals have had a rather busy season.
They saw their eldest daughter, Princess Isabella, graduate from high school and begin her military training, joined other royal families and world leaders at the funeral of Norway’s King Harald V, and still somehow found a few moments to enjoy the sun at the historic royal summer residence, Grasten Palace, in Jutland.

After a beautiful summer vacation, Queen Mary has dived straight into her royal duties with a visit to Momentet, a social-psychiatric facility.
“I’m very happy to be back, and I was really looking forward to visiting the courtyards here at Momentet,” she told the media (translated from Danish).
The facility, run by the Deaconess Foundation, focuses on supporting young adults suffering from mental health and social challenges.
As part of her role as patron of the Diakonissestiftelsen, Queen Mary met residents in their everyday environment, discussing their lives, goals and dreams. The day also included a musical performance in the residence’s communal room.

Queen Mary of Denmark joined Princess Amalia of the Netherlands and Princess Elena of Spain at the 2026 FEI World Championships opening gala in Germany this week.
The global equestrian event features world title holders in categories such as dressage, para-dressage, driving, jumping, and vaulting. Also spotted in the crowd was lauded equestrian and royal lady, Zara Tindall.
Her Majesty looked regal in a polka dot halter set from Diane von Furstenberg paired with a Dolce&Gabbana belt.

In honour of Ólavsøka in the Faroe Islands, the Danish royals have shared a throwback from their visit to the self-governing territory of the Kingdom of Denmark in June 2025.
Ólavsøka is the national day commemorating the death of King Olaf II at the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030. It also marks the beginning of parliament’s legislative year.
Along with the opening of parliament, the day is filled with music, art, festivities, and a national sea-boat race.
“Happy Ólavsøka to the entire Faroese people. We know how much the national festival means. That families and friends gather, and that many travel home to celebrate Ólavsøka. We wish everyone wonderful days, no matter where you celebrate them,” read the post.

The Danish Royals are well and truly out of office.
Taking a break from their social media silence, Queen Mary and King Frederik shared a glimpse of their summer break on their official Instagram account over the weekend.
The images showed the couple spending a lot of time outdoors with their family dogs, riding horses, and one photo that suggests they may even be enjoying a hit of tennis.

Not even the Danish royals can resist a Summer holiday. The family returned to Grasten Palace, a historic southern residence in Jutland, where they reside annually for the warmer months.
King Frederik and Queen Mary were greeted with a warm public welcome in the town square with their three children, Prince Vincent, Princess Josephine and Crown Prince Christian.
A notable absence however was Princess Isabella, who recently graduated from high school and will soon begin her military service as part of the Guard Hussar Regiment.
After greeting royal watchers, the Danish royals watched the ceremonial changing of the guard outside the palace.
However, all eyes were on the mother and daughter duo who wore similar outfits for the occasion. Josephine embraced summer with a butter yellow blazer, matched with a simple white top and polka dotted skirt. While her mum, Queen Mary, wore a tailored blue blazer, white button-down shirt and navy skirt.

Queen Mary hosted Gisèle Pelicot at the Cancellihuset in Fredensborg. The two women discussed Gisèle’s autobiography A Hymn to Life and how she has used her platform to help others.
Gisèle Pelicot (born Gisèle Guillou) is a French woman who became an international feminist icon.
In 2024, she famously said, “shame must switch sides” when she insisted on waiving her right to anonymity during France’s largest rape case.
Between 2011 and 2020, she was repeatedly drugged and raped by her former husband, Dominique, and dozens of strangers he recruited online while she was unconscious. She only learned of the decade-long abuse when police uncovered evidence on her husband’s computer during a separate investigation.

Who knew the Danish royals knew how to throw hoops?
During their final stop on their summer tour, King Frederik and Queen Mary visited Holbæk.
The pair showed off their basketball skills at the Holbaek Sports Village, while also conversing with other members of the community complex, including people playing tennis and hoola-hooping.
After meeting with the crowds that lined the streets of the harbour, Their Majesties boarded the royal yacht Dannebrog, concluding the tour.

Queen Mary and King Frederik have set sail on the royal yacht Dannebrog for their 2026 summer tour.
The pair began their trip in Odense, where they explored the Funen capital, visiting museums, cathedrals, and speaking with local students.

King Frederik turned 58 today! The Danish Royal Palace celebrated by posting a new portrait of the monarch taken in the Throne Hall at Christiansborg Castle. The Royal family and the King will appear on the balcony of Amalienborg Palace, the King’s residence, at 12 noon in Copenhagen.

King Frederik and Queen Mary started the summer sailing season aboard the royal ship Dannebrog. It’s marked each year with a traditional sailing from Copenhagen Harbour to Helsingør.
Her Majesty, Queen Mary, wore an anchor brooch to mark the occasion. Whereas King Frederik wore his full Danish naval dress uniform, reflecting his rank as an admiral in the Danish Navy.

King Frederik and Queen Mary arrived in Fredensborg to begin their summer residence at Fredensborg Castle.
Their annual arrival is marked with a festive reception. This year, locals sang a song together and greeted the royals with bouquets of flowers.

Queen Mary has made her first public appearance less than a week after announcing the passing of her beloved father, Professor John Donaldson.
Her Majesty joined her husband, King Frederik, and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, on the steps of Fredensborg Castle in celebration of her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe’s 86th birthday.
While the Danish Queen didn’t wear the traditional mourning colour, black, she opted for a dark navy blue suit.

It’s not just the British royal family that has its Easter traditions. The Danish royal family spent the weekend participating in the annual High Mass at Frederiks Church.
Together, with their four children, the Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, King Frederik and Queen Mary were received at the Marble Church by Parish Priest Mikkel Wold.
It’s not often that royal watchers get to see the family of six altogether, and this weekend we were reminded just how much the children have grown.

King Frederik and Queen Mary hosted the final of the New Year’s Galas in Copenhagen. Queen Mary wore a fabulous beige gown embroidered with gold flowers.

The new year galas continue in Copenhagen on Monday, 5 January.
The day’s festivities began with the Supreme Court judges, the Royal Life Guards and the Guard Hussar Regiment’s officer corps at Amalienborg Palace. Next, the royal couple welcomed diplomats from across Denmark before travelling to Christiansborg Palace for a gala reception.
Queen Mary looked radiant in a deep blue velvet dress with a matching jacket, which was pinned with the Order of the Elephant. The Australian-born Queen opted not to wear a tiara. Instead, her hair was pulled back into a chic half-updo. And she also wore the Pearl Poire earrings.
New Year’s Day, 2026
The Danish Royals had a grand celebration for New Year’s Day in Copenhagen. Hosted by King Frederik and Queen Mary, and attended by Queen Margarthe, Princess Marie, and the Crown Prince Christian, as well as Danish dignitaries, royal court, and politicians.
It was only the second time that King Frederik and Queen Mary hosted the annual event. Prior to that, Queen Margarthe hosted it for 52 years.
The gala was held at Christian VII’s Palace at Amalienborg. It is the first of five galas held at the start of the year. The next one will take place also at Amalienborg for the Supreme Court, Royal Life Guards, and Guard Hussage Regiment officer corps.
Queen Mary dazzled in a gold floor-genth Jesper Høvring gown accessroied with a Rose-Cut Diamond Bandeau Tiara and diamond earrings.
She also wore the Nassut Tiearrings from the Danish Crown Diamond Parure.

After many years abroad, Princess Marie returned to Denmark in 2025 with her husband, the brother of King Frederik Prince Joachim, and their children. She has been attending more events in her capacity as princess. The French-born royal also married into the Danish Royal Family and is the sister-in-law of the reigning monarchs.

On a two-day state visit to Latvia, King Frederik and Queen Mary were awarded new military orders, by Latvia’s President Edgars Rinkevics, in honour of the two countries long-enduring ties in the wake of unrest across the continent.
King Frederik was awarded Latvia’s highest military order, the Grand Cross of the Order of the Knights of the Cross, while Queen Mary was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Three Stars. In return, King Frederik awarded Denmark’s highest order of chivalry to the Latvian president, appointing him as a Knight of the Order of the Elephant.
Their Majesties later attended a State banquet at Riga Castle, where they wore their new orders pinned to their dress.

Queen Mary and her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe II, visited GeoCenter Møns Klint in Borre near the chalk cliffs of Møns Klint.
The current and former reigning monarchs were welcomed by a reception committee, where they were presented with flowers.
The pair visited the GeoCenter to view an exhibition on the area’s natural history before stepping out for a windswept cliffside walk. As storm clouds rolled in, the two queens shared a lighthearted moment seeking shelter from the rain, a scene that charmed onlookers.
The outing was especially meaningful, with Queen Margrethe serving as patron of the GeoCenter. Their joint appearance was notable, as the Danish queens are seldom seen attending public events together, without the rest of the royal family.

Queen Mary blessed the first electric tugboat in Copenhagen. Fully battery-powered and recharged with renewable energy, the ceremony saw Mary name the vessel Svitzer Ingrid.

King Frederik and Queen Mary embarked on their four-day summer cruise aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog.
They are visiting numerous Danish municipalities along their journey from Frederikshavn Municipality on the island of Jutland, Thisted Municipality, the coastal sand dunes of Råbjerg Mile and many more.

Queen Mary returned to royal duties on 14 August to attend the opening of Headspace Tårnby, a new counselling centre for those aged between 12 and 25 years of age. She performed a ribbon-cutting ceremony alongside local officials, including the mayor of Tårnby Municipality and Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, patron and founder of Det Sociale Netværk/headspace Danmark.
Trine Hammershøy, CEO of Headspace Danmark, expressed that Queen Mary’s participation made “a world of difference” — offering credibility and moral support to both the organisation’s volunteers and the youth they help.
The Australian-born monarch has long supported mental health initiatives. She established the Mary Foundation in 2007, which works to improve the lives of those, particularly young people, who are socially isolated.

King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark have arrived in Gråsten where they will be spending their summer holiday.
The royal couple were joined by their children Princess Isabella and Prince Vincent.
Queen Mary was glowing in a paisley print dress by London label Me+Em. She topped it with a wool jacket by Ralph Lauren. Meanwhile Princess Isabella opted for a fun floral print silk dress by Diane von Furstenberg.
The family were greeted by Mayor of Sønderborg Municipality, Erik Lauritzen, and the Sønderborg Municipal Council for an official reception to celebrate their seasonal relocation.
Held at Gråsten Square the quartet met with wellwishers as a band played on.
Queen Margrethe and Princess Benedikte will later join them, all staying in Gråsten Castle for the summer. The palace was designated as the official summer residence of King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid in 1935. Since that date it has been a tradition for the Danish royals to use it each summer.

Two European royal houses collided – or, that is, met on opposite sides of the bridge – to celebrate the 25th-anniversary celebration of the Øresund Bridge in Malmo.
King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark met with their Swedish counterparts King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden for the occasion. The bridge itself is part of the Øresund Link, which connects the road and rail networks of the Scandinavian Peninsula with those of Central and Western Europe.

Queen Mary has made an official two-day diplomatic visit to Nigeria, with the Danish Palace releasing images of her recent stay.
Attending without her husband, King Frederik, the Aussie-born royal toured the capital city of Abuja where she was on hand for the launch of the 10 Million Safer Births initiative, of which she is a patron. The project aims to give up 10 million women access to safer childbirth across sub-Saharan Africa.
“For nearly two decades, I’ve been following the global evolution of maternal mortality,” Queen Mary said.
“Despite a global drop in maternal mortality rates since 2000, progress has slowed, and several global crises are now threatening to reverse the curve.
“Every second minute, a woman dies of causes related to pregnancy or childbirth. Every fourteen seconds, a newborn suffers the same fate. I have often been left with a sense of wonder: Why is it so hard to make progress on an agenda so basic and human?”
Currently in the initial stage, 10 Million Safer Births will take place in Nigeria, Tanzania and Ethiopia.

King Frederik celebrated his 57th birthday at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. During the celebrations, the royal family, including his mother Queen Margrethe, his wife Queen Mary, and their children Princess Isabella, who recently celebrated her 18th birthday, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine. Unfortunately, his son, Crown Prince Christian, was not in attendance, likely because he is continuing his Lieutenant’s training.
The Danish royals erupted in giggles when one of their two border collies, Grace and Coco, joined them on the balcony.

May 14, 2025, marked Queen Mary and King Frederik’s 21st wedding anniversary.
Sadly, the couple had to spend the day apart; duty calls, as they say.
Mary also held a meeting at the Mary Foundation, her eponymous charity which was founded in 2007 and tackles several issues like bullying, domestic violence and loneliness.
Furthermore, Frederik presented the Danish Academy of Science’s gold medal to this year’s recipient; Frederik is one of the institution’s patrons.
The then-Crown Prince Frederik and then-Mary Donaldson tied the knot in May 2004 at Copenhagen Cathedral after four years of dating.

Continuing with the New Year relay events, King Frederik and Queen Mary hosted the Royal Life Guards, Officers Corps of the Guardhouse Regiment, and the Supreme Court Judges for a celebratory reception in the Knights Hall at Christiansborg Palace.
Their Majesties will continue to host multiple diplomats over the coming days in recognition of the new year.

From the first day of January, the Danish Royals hold the traditional New Year relay in Amalienborg. Furthermore, this year marks Queen Mary and King Frederik’s first time hosting, and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Christian will attend.
The first event recognises the Order of the Elephant, one of Denmark’s oldest and most prestigious knighthoods.

King Frederik and Queen Mary took to Instagram on December 19 to share how they had decorated their home for Christmas. The royal couple shared several pictures of their tree, which featured a David Bowie ornament, a horse ornament, and, in a clear nod to Mary’s motherland, a kangaroo ornament. They also shared a glimpse of their wreath-adorned front door, their garland-covered fireplace mantel and a sweet reindeer figurine.

Queen Mary attended the WeShelter food club event on December 17. Her Majesty is a patron of the organisation, which has been helping vulnerable individuals since 1893.
During the visit, for which Mary donned a very festive Christmas jumper, she met with volunteers at the food centre and helped prepare a Christmas meal.

New official civilian portraits of King Frederik and Queen Mary were released on November 22, 2024.
The portraits were taken by photographer Steen Evald in Frederick VIII’s Palace in Amalienborg. They will now be used by the Royal House in connection with official engagements, visits and special events as well as the protections of the Royal Couple.

After being spotted in Sydney, Australia, on October 30, 2024, Queen Mary and Princess Josephine arrived back in Denmark in early November.
The mother-daughter duo then attended the annual Hubertusjagt Drag Hunting Event in Dyrehaven on November 3. The event, which includes almost 200 riders, is held every November at the Jægersborg deer park. It is a recreation of the par force hunt and is attended by numerous spectators, including a handful of royals.

Queen Mary and King Frederik attended an official dinner for the 25th anniversary of the Nordic Embassies in Berlin on October 21, 2024. The evening was dedicated to the heads of state of Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
In addition to the Danish Royal couple, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden, Icelandic President Halla Tomasdottir and her husband Björn Skulason, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and his wife Suzanne Innes-Stubb, and Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Mette-Marit of Norway were also in attendance.

Queen Mary had a very busy day on September 23. In the morning, Her Majesty attended the National Conference for Health Nurses with the Mary Foundation.
The conference’s theme was “violence in the family” and was officially opened with a speech from Her Majesty. Mary has sat as chairman of the foundation since 2007.
In the afternoon, Mary attended the Opera, where she honoured seven teachers with the 2024 Teaching Award. This award is given to teachers who excel in their profession.
September 20-22, 2024
September 20, 2024, marked a first for Queen Mary; she began acting as regent for the first time since assuming the title of Queen.
In Denmark, a regent is a person who temporarily rules on behalf of the monarch when the monarch is unable to perform their duties due to absence or incapacity.
And as King Frederik went abroad from September 20 to September 22, Mary stepped up!

Just before the 2024 Paris Olympics kicked off, Frederik and Mary took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the Danish Pavilion on the Champs-Élysées.
It was especially sweet considering that the couple first met at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

“Every year around midsummer, students hatch all over the country. Today it was His Royal Highness the Crown Prince’s turn to experience the very special feeling of freedom that the student cap gives,” Frederik and Mary wrote on Instagram.

On May 26, Frederik turned 56. But rather than receiving a gift, he gave Mary one.
The King awarded his wife with the rarely bestowed honour of the Grand Commander’s Cross of the Dannebrog.
Currently, only seven living titleholders have received it.
