Fashion’s biggest night, the Met Gala will take place on May 5, 2026 (Australian time) at the famed Metropolitan Museum of Art and we finally know what the theme is.
Plus, Australia’s own Nicole Kidman will be acting as co-chair this year, alongside some other well-known celebrities.
Below is everything you need to know about the 2026 Met Gala.
What is the Met Gala 2026 theme?
This year’s theme will celebrate the spring exhibition ‘Costume Art’ featuring nearly 400 objects spanning some 5,000 years of art history.

‘Costume Art’ includes the Costume Institute’s archive of elaborate fashion pieces, paired with Western art that depicts the human body.
“I wanted to focus on the centrality of the dressed body within the museum, connecting artistic representations of the body with fashion as an embodied art form,” Costume Institute curator Andrew said in a statement.
“Focusing primarily on Western art from prehistory to the present, the show will explore artistic representations of the dressed body, pairing fashions and artworks from the museum’s vast collection to highlight the inherent relationship between clothing and the body,” read a post from the Costume Institute.
What is the Met Gala 2026 dress code?
Yes, the dress code and theme are technically different, however, both influence the other.
The theme rather informs celebrity attendees on what to wear as they walk the famed steps. Vogue has revealed the Met Gala dress code for this year will be “Fashion is Art.”

Such pieces of inspiration could include The Winged Victory of Samothrace (above) or Michelangelo’s David.
Who are the Met Gala 2026 co-chairs?
