His work had a profound impact on psychological practice in Australia, earning him recognition in both academia and the broader health community, as well as a Member of the Order of Australia.

Tony married Janelle Glenny in 1963, and they were the proud parents of two daughters: Nicole, born in 1967, and Antonia, born in 1970.

The sad news was announced at the Venice Film Festival; Nicole won Best Actress at the festival for her performance in Babygirl.

Halina Reijn, the director of Babygirl, accepted the award on Nicole’s behalf and read a statement penned by Nicole onstage.

“Today, I arrived in Venice to learn shortly thereafter that my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, has just passed. I’m in shock, and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her,” Halina said on behalf of Nicole.

“She shaped me, she guided me, and she made me. I’m beyond grateful that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina. The collision of art and life is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken.”

Nicole opened up about Janelle’s death in December 2024, during an interview with Sunday Morning.

“Three months on, and people say to me ‘Yeah, she was 84, a good life…’ But that was my mum. It doesn’t matter what age someone is. There is no limit on grief, you don’t have to have a time limit on it, you don’t have to be all better by this time,” Nicole candidly said before revealing what her mother’s last words to her.

“The final words my mama said to me, I was gonna get on a plane, and she said, ‘Maybe wait a minute, because you just need to take care of yourself, Nicki.’

“I’m doing that more, and I say that to other people in the world. Particularly, women, I think we tend not to care of ourselves. We take care of everybody else, but the last person is here. My grandmother left me with ‘Be happy’ and my mother said ‘Take care of yourself.'”

In May 2025, in honour of Mother’s Day, Nicole once again spoke of Janelle’s death in a moving op-ed for the Sydney Morning Herald.

“I would say that, deeply, my mother loved life with an incredibly sharp sense of humour,” the Practical Magic star said.

“The tears still come. Huge raindrop tears, too. And you go, ‘Are they going to stop? When do they stop?’ I don’t have an answer for that. I don’t know when they’ll ever stop.”
