It’s hard to believe that this year will mark 30 years since the movie Babe was released.
The comedy-drama hit Australian cinemas in December 1995, and was quickly met with universal praise from critics and viewers alike.
Babe went on to be nominated for seven Academy Awards (AKA Oscars): Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Art Direction and Best Film Editing.
It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

Was Babe an Australian movie?
Babe was directed by Australian filmmaker Chris Noonan and produced by Australian filmmaker George Miller.
There were also a few Australians in the cast – Magda Szubanski, Hugo Weaving, and Paul ‘Flacco’ Livingston.
Plus, Babe was filmed in Robertson, New South Wales.
In honour of the upcoming 30th anniversary, the town’s ‘Big Potato’ was transformed into the titular talking pig.
Local artist Samuel Hall was commissioned to paint the Babe mural and told Region Illawarra:

“I’m old enough to remember Babe. It was one of my favourite movies growing up, funnily enough.
“It’s not my most expansive work and it’s not something I’ll think is my greatest work ever, but it’s allowed me to have a bit of fun.
“It was more about being something for the community.”
