Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are one of Hollywood’s elite couples. And they buck the trend for romantic relationships, being together for 42 years in 2026.
The pair began dating in 1983 and have been together ever since. They have even starred opposite each other in five movies and welcomed one child, actor Wyatt Russell, during that time.
And yet, despite a 40-year-long love affair, Goldie and Kurt have never wed.

Of course, Goldie was married to Gus Trikonis from 1969 until 1976 and to Bill Hudson (father of Kate Hudson) from 1976 until 1982, while Russell was married to Season Hubley from 1979 until 1983, but Goldie and Russell have never married each other.
And Goldie has explained why that is.
Speaking to CNN‘s Chris Wallace, the Death Becomes Her actress said, “Why should we be? Isn’t that a better question?” when asked why she and Kurt have never tied the knot.
“When it doesn’t work out, it ends up to be big business,” Goldie continued before adding:

“It’s always ugly… Somebody actually has to take a look and say, ‘How many divorces actually are fun? How many divorces actually don’t cost money? Or how many divorces actually make you hate the person more than you did before? How many divorces have hurt children?'”
Chris then pointed out that Goldie and Kurt had been together for four decades, and therefore, were “not going to get divorced” if they were to wed.
“How did you know that then?” Goldie retorted. “I like the idea that I can wake up in the morning and make decisions every day if I want to be here.”
“I mean relationships are hard. They’re not always easy. There’s all kinds of hurdles we go through. There’s things that we believe in, things we don’t believe in, we agree on,” she went on to say.

“So I think ultimately staying independent with independent thinking is important, so you can hold on to yourself, and you can actually have that feeling.”
The “very spontaneous” pair feel that their relationship is “fed on a lot of goodness” and a “wonderful life together.”
“When I say freedom, it means liberation, I don’t feel penned in,” Goldie confessed to People in April 2026 when their dynamic made headlines again.
Goldie is also the mother to actors Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson, whom she shares with ex-husband Bill.
However, Kurt has an extremely close relationship with Kate and Oliver; Kate even calls Kurt, “Pa”.
On an episode of The Dan Buettner Podcast, the 80-year-old Goldie Hawn shared that the reason they work so well and have lasted so long is “freedom”.
“I’m a bird. And you leave the cage door open, I may never fly out. But if you close that door, for my freedom and my independence, I would probably take all my feathers off.”
“It’s a freedom of basically not melding into somebody else, when you’re copacetic on certain areas, and you have freedom.”
