Australian athletes take to Italy for the 2026 Winter Olympics

Australians might be battling the Summer heat, but some of our country’s best athletes are packing up their skis and winter coats for the 2026 Winter Olympics

With the final members of the Australian team decided, 53 athletes will travel to northern Italy to represent the nation. 

Below, The Weekly has answered all your burning questions about the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. 

When is the Winter Olympics 2026? 

The 2026 Olympic Winter Games will run for two weeks, from February 7 to February 23 AEDT. 

The opening ceremony will be held at Milan’s San Siro Stadium on Saturday, February 7, at 6am AEDT. However, the competition will already be underway at this stage given curling, luge, snowboarding, Alpine skiing and women’s hockey will begin on February 4.

Who is hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics?

The 2026 Winter Olympics are being held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. The games have also been called Milano Cortina 2026, given its location.

This years Winter Olympics will be streamed by Channel 9 and Stan Sport in Australia. 

Who is representing Australia in the 2026 Winter Olympics? 

Australia has gathered an impressive team for the upcoming Milano Cortina 2026 games. With 53 athletes, it is our second-largest Winter Olympic team and the biggest in 12 years.

Additionally, the Australian Olympic Committee confirmed female athletes make up 62.3 per cent of the team. This is the highest proportion ever selected for an Australian Olympic squad for both Winter and Summer games. 

Competing yet again is Olympic Champion Jakara Anthony who made history during the 2022 Beijing games, as the first champion from Australia in 12 years during the freestyle skiing moguls. Also on the team is Scotty James (Snowboard Halfpipe), Matt Graham (Moguls), Tess Coady (Snowboard Big Air/Slopestyle) and Jarryd Hughes (Snowboard Cross). 

The team also includes five teenagers, including Ally Hickman, Amelie Haskell, Daisy Thomas, Abbey Wilson, and Indra Brown. They will be among the 28 athletes making their Olympic Debut.

“I started dreaming about being an Olympian in 2022 after seeing Jakara Anthony win gold in Moguls. It was super inspirational and just gave me a lot of passion and desire to do it as well,” Indra, 15, told AOC. “I’m really excited just to get this experience that not many people are able to experience in their lifetime.”
