Finding an everyday skincare routine for mature skin can be tricky. While the countless ‘age-rewinding serums’ promising miracles rarely work, one thing that’ll always make your skin sing is a hydrating at-home facial routine.

As we age, our skin tends to become drier. To counter this, it’s important to adopt a skincare routine that includes key hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and ceramides. These elements will not only help to keep your skin hydrated and healthy, but they can also give your skin a seriously glorious glow.

Treating yourself to a facial at the salon always feels incredible, but sometimes you just need a nourishing skin reset from the comfort of your home. Make an event of it by donning a wonderfully plush robe (if you’re after a bright and cosy one, Hommey is the place to look), popping on your slippers and enjoying the simple luxury that an at-home facial routine can bring.

Step one: Cleanse

Cleansing your skin is non-negotiable, even when you’re not doing a dedicated at-home facial routine. When washing away the day’s makeup or buildup, you’ll want to look for products that support your skin. While squeaky-clean sounds great, you don’t want your skin to be left with that ultra-tight, dried-out feeling.

To achieve ‘clean but hydrated’ skin, opt for cleansing balms and oil cleansers for the freshest cleanse.

Step two: Exfoliate

If the early 2000s controversy of that intense physical exfoliant led you to leave this step out of your skincare routine altogether, we want to reassure you that it’s okay to add it back.

Mature skin typically leans towards dry and is often easily irritated, so opting for a chemical exfoliant will offer the best support for your skin. Chemical exfoliants work by gently resurfacing your skin, sloughing away the dry, dead skin and revealing smoother, softer skin underneath. Paula’s Choice 6% Mandelic Acid + 2% Lactic Acid Liquid Exfoliant ($50 from Paula’s Choice) has been specifically formulated to meet the needs of mature skin while remaining a gentle option.

Step three: Mask

Once your skin has been cleansed and exfoliated, it’s time to treat. Arguably, the best part of any at-home facial routine is the mask, and while the iconic clay masks of days gone by might be too drying for your skin, there are plenty of ultra-hydrating options available.

Look for masks that offer hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and ceramides to aim to boost that fresh glow. Once you’ve had a good, long relax with your nourishing mask doing all the hard work, you can then enhance the benefits with a red-light mask. Red light LED masks such as Current Body’s Red Light Therapy Face Mask: Series 2 ($679.99 from Current Body) work in tandem with other products to help support your skin’s natural collagen structure.

Step four: Hydrate

The final piece of the at-home facial routine puzzle is a dedicated layer (or two) of hydration. While hydrating masks have their necessary place, incorporating plumping hydration from a serum and locking it in with a rich moisturiser can’t be beaten.

To find the best skin-supporting ingredients for ultimate hydration, look for ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and peptides. Ceramides are naturally occurring lipids (oils) found on your skin that help to lock in the natural hydration. While cult-favourite hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant that binds to and retains moisture in your skin, giving it a plumper appearance. The skincare ingredient having its moment are peptides – the building blocks of your skin’s structure. Peptides work to support your natural collagen levels, resulting in firmer-feeling skin.

The trio of skin moisture barrier supporting ingredients can be found in the Elizabeth Arden Hyaluronic Acid + Peptides Hydra-Plumping Ceramide Capsules ($165 from Elizabeth Arden) and Water Cream ($165 from Elizabeth Arden). This hydration-boosting duo aims to provide deep hydration, to leave your skin feeling bouncy and radiant, thanks to the high-performing, science-backed formulation.
