There has long been this idea that 10,000 steps a day is what we need to achieve to be ‘healthy’, when it could be much less than that. A new study from Vanderbilt University Medical Centre in the US has found that a brisk 15-minute walk daily is linked to a reduced risk of premature death.

Not only is walking incredible for heart health, increasing longevity and overall weight management, but it’s also low-impact and free, meaning you’re able to fit it into your busy schedule. The best way to add a little fun to your walking routine is to plan a weekly walk and talk with friends, having a laugh as you go.

Zumba

Is there anything more fun than having a dance to some good music with your friends? Between the endorphin rush and the fitness benefits dancing can be an incredible way to exercise. While the going out dancing days might be in the review mirror, there’s another way to have a boogie and a laugh all without having to get dolled up and put on heels. Enter: Zumba.

Led by an instructor, you’ll be guided through some heart-pumping choreography that will undoubtedly have you working up a sweat. Be sure to bring a group of friends along for the most fun workout you could imagine.

Aqua Aerobics

If you’re dealing with any mobility or joint issues and hard-surface exercise isn’t for you, then hop in the pool for a weightless workout. Aqua aerobics offers a fun alternative to cardio but is no less rigorous (splashing is optional), as is wetting your hair.
