What is the Strawberry Full Moon and how will it affect you?

Despite what its name suggests, it's not a pink or a red moon this month...

It’s a new month in the lunar cycle, which means another full moon is coming around. In June, that full moon is called the “Strawberry Full Moon”.

Sounds delicious, let’s dive into it.

When will the Strawberry Full Moon happen in Australia?

According to Time and Date, the moon will reach its peak on Wednesday, June 11, 2025. You can find specific times when it will peak in your area here.

Due to its location in the calendar, it’s the full moon which is closest to the winter solstice, on June 21. For us down in the southern hemisphere, it’s the winter solstice, aka the shortest day of the year. Whereas, in the northern hemisphere, it’s the summer solstice and the longest day of the year for them. This is because of the Earth’s tilt. This may give you a hint as to how the astrological phenomenon got its name…

Why is it called the Strawberry Full Moon?

Despite what the name suggests, it is not pink or red in colour. Like the Flower Full Moon in May, its name actually derives from nature and agricultural practices.

Its name originates from Native American groups, particularly the Algonquin, Ojibwe, Dakota, Lakota, Chippewa, Oneida, and Sioux Peoples. They associated this lunar event with the ripening of wild berries, signalling the time for harvesting these fruits.

This naming tradition was later adopted by European settlers and has been passed down through generations. However, it’s not the only name for the full moon in June.

Other names for the Strawberry Full Moon and its link to honeymoons…

According to Farmer’s Almanac, many Europeans referred to it as the “Rose Moon”, probably linked to blooming roses in summertime. In China, it was called the “Lotus Moon”.

Another name for the phenomenon is “Honey Moon” or “Mead Moon”, which some believe could have led to people adopting the term “honeymoon” for a newlywed’s holiday after their wedding, as many marriages took place in late spring/early summer. However, it is hotly debated!

Lending credence to the theory was the custom to gift newlyweds mead (a fermented honey wine) during the 5th century in Anglo-Saxon areas. Mead was believed to bring fertility, prosperity, and happiness to the couple.

How to see the Strawberry Full Moon?

To see a full moon, you don’t need a telescope or any special equipment — just the right time, a clear view of the sky, and ideally a location with minimal light pollution.

Check the times it’s meant to rise. For the most dramatic viewing (and warm golden tones), watch it just after moonrise or before moonset.

Opt for beach or hilltop, somewhere which offers unobstructed views and without too much artificial light.

Can a full moon affect you?

Opinions differ when it comes to how the moon can affect you. Some studies (e.g. a 2013 study published in Current Biology) suggest people may sleep less deeply or take longer to fall asleep during a full moon, even in controlled conditions without visible moonlight.

People often describe feeling more restless, anxious, or emotionally charged during a full moon. This may be due to the moon’s symbolic associations with intuition, reflection, and release. It is where we get the term “lunacy” from.

In astrology and some spiritual traditions, the full moon is seen as a powerful energetic peak. It is a time of culmination, ideal for manifesting intentions, letting go, or celebrating achievements.
