The November full moon, dubbed the Beaver Moon is the second in a series of three rare super full moons occurring in 2025. The first event occurred in October, followed by November and lastly the last supermoon of 2025 in December.

Below, The Weekly is detailing everything you need to know about the supermoon.

When is the next supermoon in Australia?

The November full moon will begin the evening of Wednesday November 5, 2025. However, it won’t reach its fullest point until 12:19 AEDT on November 6.

But do you really have to stay awake until midnight? No.

Leading astronomy expert and Astrophysicist at Macquarie University Associate Professor Devika Kamath shed some light on the phenomenon.

“In Australia, the best viewing time is just after moonrise, around 6:00–6:30 pm local time, depending on your location,” she revealed.

“The best place to see it is anywhere away from buildings or trees, with a clear view of the eastern horizon—open fields, beaches, or hilltops are ideal.”

What is a supermoon?

A supermoon occurs when the full moon coincides with perigee — the point in its orbit where it swings nearest to Earth. Devika revealed the moon can appear to be up to 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than usual.

“Also, every 29.5 days — the length of a synodic month — the Moon cycles from new to full and back again, always keeping the same face turned towards us thanks to its synchronous rotation,” she said.

“Most months, a full Moon simply shines as a bright, round disc. But when that full Moon happens close to perigee, we get the spectacle we call a Supermoon.”

But the lunar event isn’t just dazzling in the night sky. Devika reminded those of its slightly stronger impact on our oceans. Given the moon is closer to the Earth, its gravitational pull is also subtly increased.

“These raise high tides a little higher than usual and make low tides a little lower — typically by only a few centimetres. The effect is modest compared to the impact of storms or local weather,” she said.

Why is the November ‘Beaver’ supermoon special?

Supermoons themselves are particularly rare given their occurrence, but a series of three consecutive supermoons in 2025 certainly is.

Of this 2025 series, there is one lunar event that stands out: the November Beaver supermoon.

“The 5 November Supermoon will be the closest of the year, making it the biggest and brightest Moon of 2025. On that night, the Moon will be about 30,000 km closer to Earth than at an average full Moon — enough to make a clear difference to the naked eye,” she shared.

What is The Beaver Moon?

The Beaver Moon is a title traditionally used by the Indigenous peoples of North America. It marks the season when beavers build their winter lodges, and a time when trappers set out before rivers froze.

Given the moon’s names typically come from the Northern Hemisphere’s traditions and the farming calendar, it holds no agricultural significance for Australians.

However, there are some energy shifts that astrology-lovers should consider. The supermoon is in Taurus, an Earth placement which rules material possessions and comforting structures. Our stability and self-worth will be pulled into question as we seek balance, grounding and security.
