When Avatar released in 2009, viewers from around the globe were fascinated with the Na’vi and their beautiful, yet mysterious world, Pandora.
Everyone around the world was shocked upon hearing the news they were expanding the world more than a decade later with Avatar: Way of Water in 2022.

We will see more of Pandora than ever before in the third film, Avatar: Fire and Ash. But based on the carnage shown in the trailer, it may not be for the better.
At the D23 Expo in 2024, Avatar director James Cameron said: “It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before.”
“There are new characters, one especially I think you’re gonna love, or love to hate.”
Ahead of Avatar: Fire and Ash’s release, below is everything you need to know about the third movie.
When does Avatar: Fire and Ash release?
The official trailer confirmed Avatar: Fire and Ash will release on December 18, 2025, in cinemas across Australia.

What is the plot for Avatar: Fire and Ash?
The previous two Avatar films brought to life different cultures and Na’vi’s way of life, like the forest-dwelling Omaticaya and the Metkayina who reside by the ocean.
In the third movie, viewers will be introduced to The Mangkwan Clan, also known as the Ash People, who James has revealed are violent and power-hungry. A key player in the Mangkwan Clan is leader Varang.
The explicit details regarding the plot of Fire and Ash are sparse – but we’d watch Avatar without knowing a single thing about it.
There were a few details in the first trailer, released in August, that gave away some major clues regarding the dark path we’ll travel down in Avatar 3.

The trailer starts off peacefully, before quickly turning violent with the Ash People, who are seen teaming up with the earth-destroying humans! Miles, who transformed from human to Na’vi in Avatar 2, was also wearing red paint donned by the Ash People.
“Your Goddess has no dominion here,” Varang hauntingly said, seeming to be gripping Spider’s hair in the corner of the frame.
Spider – the human child of Miles Quaritch – wasn’t wearing an oxygen mask. The second movie explained that he was born and raised on Pandora, relying on an oxygen mask to travel around. So, what has changed? The second trailer teased a way to allow humans to breathe without masks, which could mark the end of the Na’vi people.
A clip also sees Jake Sully captured by the humans, meanwhile Neytiri seems to still be enraged following her son Neteyam’s death in Way of Water.
Who is the cast of Avatar: Fire and Ash?
It wouldn’t be Avatar without Jake Sully and Neytiri leading the charge! Both Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña are reprising their Avatar roles.

Disney has confirmed Harry Potter’s David Thewlis will join the third movie as Peylak. James has teased his character will play a major role in the fourth and fifth films.
