But if you’re more interested in what went down during the ceremony, keep reading for the best (and worst) moments from the 2025 Oscars…

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo kicked off the ceremony
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the stars of the Wicked movie, opened the 2025 Academy Awards with a medley of songs related to their musical film. Ariana performed Somewhere Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz and Cynthia performed Home from The Wiz. The powerhouse vocalists then sang Defying Gravity from Wicked together.

Conan O’Brien nailed his opening monologue
Host Conan O’Brien had the audience in stitches with his opening monologue. No one was safe from a little roasting, the comedian made jokes at everyone’s expense… He even referenced the Karla Sofía Gascón scandal (Karla recently posted several offensive Tweets on X) and joked, “Karla, if you’re going to Tweet about this, my name is Jimmy Kimmel.”
Jimmy then burst into song, singing a funny, very meta, original number called I Won’t Waste Time.

Adam Sandler wore a very Adam Sandler outfit
It’s been a long-running joke in Hollywood that Adam Sandler, despite all his success and riches, dresses very, very casually. As a part of Conan’s opening monologue, the camera panned to Adam in the audience and he was wearing a typical Adam Sandler outfit. Adam then jokingly stormed out after Conan called attention to his attire. It was hilarious.

Andrew Garfield made Goldie Hawn tear up
Andrew Garfield and Goldie Hawn presented the award for Best Animated Feature and Best Animated Short together. But before they did so, Andrew thanked Goldie as she was his late mother’s favourite actress. Goldie understandably teared up.

Bowen Yang wore his Wicked costume
Bowen Yang wore his Wicked costume to present the award for Best Costume Design. He joked that he felt betrayed by his fellow presenters – Lily-Rose Depp, Elle Fanning, John Lithgow and Connie Nielsen – as they didn’t wear their film costumes to present. Both Lily-Rose and John jokingly clapped back, saying it would’ve been “cringe” to do so.

There was a random tribute to James Bond
Halle Berry took to the stage during this year’s Oscars to randomly pay tribute to the James Bond films. Margaret Qualley then performed a tango to the James Bond theme song. And to close out the tribute, Lisa performed Live and Let Die, Doja Cat sang Diamonds are Forever, and Raye sang Skyfall. Considering its not a special anniversary or anything, the whole thing (while entertaining) felt out of place.

Ben Stiller hilariously got stuck
When Ben Stiller began rising from the stage to present Best Production Design, he hilariously got stuck. The rising platform then bucked a few times, and Ben ended up having to jump up onto the stage.

Morgan Freeman paid tribute to Gene Hackman
Oscar-winner and veteran actor Morgan Freeman took to the stage during this year’s Oscars to pay tribute to the late Gene Hackman. “Rest in peace, my friend,” Morgan said.
The ‘In Memoriam’ section then began and paid tribute to Maggie Smith, Gena Rowlands, Bob Newhart, Kris Kristofferson, Teri Garr, Donald Sutherland, Shelley Duvall, David Lynch, James Earl Jones, and more.

Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg and Queen Latifah paid tribute to Quincy Jones
In honour of Quincy Jones, Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg took to the stage and praised the late producer/composer’s contributions to film.
“When we talk about Black excellence, we’re talking about Q,” Whoopi said to applause.
“My life changed forever and for the better because of him,” Oprah added.
Queen Latifah then performed Ease on Down the Road, a song Quincy produced for the film adaptation of The Wiz.

Adrien Brody told them to “turn the music off”
Adrien Brody won Best Actor for his performance in The Brutalist. He gave a lengthy acceptance speech and so, the music starting playing. But he stopped mid-speech to say, “Stop the music.” The music surprisingly was stopped and he continued his speech.

There was a When Harry Met Sally reunion
Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, who starred in the iconic 1989 film When Harry Met Sally, reunited to present the prestigious Best Picture award.

Anora took home Best Picture
Speaking of Best Picture, Anora took home the most prestigious award of the night.
