The drama has all the ingredients necessary to make a gripping watch — A-list actors, dramatic outback landscapes and an incredible writing and directing team. Add in a central plot that focuses on a bitter family feud over a billion-dollar cattle station and it’s no wonder that the show is getting comparisons to successful US series Yellowstone.

What is Territory about?

Set in the Northern Territory, the drama centres on the battle for Marianne Station – the largest cattle station in Australia and a long-family run dynasty. The problems start given that when the patriarch of the Lawson family dies, there is no clear successor and so the family — Emily, Graham, Colin, Susie and Marshall — are pitted against each other as they fight for control of the kingdom.

But they are not the only ones who want to take over the estate. Also in play are rival cattle barons, billionaire miners, desert gangsters, and Indigenous elders, all trying to wrestle for control. Who will win the war?

Where was Territory filmed?

Filmed in South Australia and the Northern Territory, the series travelled to some of the most remote and impressive outback locations our country has to offer.

Marianne Station, which forms the backdrop for the series, was shot on a real-life working cattle station Tipperary Station. Over 200 cast and crew lived on the property — which is so large it has its own airfield and school — for the first four weeks of the shoot. Territory used actual heads of cattle, moving upwards of 3000 at a time to create some incredible shots.

The Lawson family homestead was purpose-built at Tipperary station and exterior shots were taken there. The majority of interior shots, however, were filmed in Adelaide.

Production was also given permission to film landscape shots at Kakadu National Park, thanks to the Traditional Owners — the Nadji Family, Buntji Clan of Hawk Dreaming and the Djabulukga Association and with the support of the Kakadu National Park. It is the setting for the series’ opening and closing episodic moments and is a sacred ancient place for its Indigenous story and characters.

Created by Timothy Lee (Mystery Road, Bump) and Ben Davies (Bondi Rescue, The First Inventors, Outback Ringer), the show’s working title was Desert King when it was first announced back in August 2023.

“Set in the Australian Outback, epic succession tale Desert King revolves around billionaire miners, traditional owners, cowboys and desert gangsters fighting over the world’s biggest cattle station the size of Wales,” wrote US industry bible Variety at the time. “It’s a hot, dusty, sexy Outback Western with guns and helicopters.”
