When Prince Harry confirmed his engagement to actress Meghan Markle in November 2017, it wasn’t necessarily a cause of celebration.
Ever since rumours of their relationship began in July 2016, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been subject to opinions both inside and outside Buckingham Palace.
Prince Phillip, grandfather to Prince Harry and husband to the late Queen Elizabeth, was reportedly reluctant to welcome Meghan into the royal family.
The novel, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York written by historian Andrew Lownie, discussed Prince Phillip’s hesitancy, as cited by the Daily Mail.
On November 27, 2017, Kensington Palace confirmed the pair were getting engaged after a year of dating.

In Andrew’s novel, he claimed that upon hearing of the engagement, Prince Philip warned: “One steps out with actresses, one doesn’t marry them.”
He wasn’t the only member of the British royal family who held reservations about Prince Harry and Meghan’s union.
At the time, the Prince and Princess of Wales offered their congratulations, writing on X (formerly Twitter): “We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together.”
Prince Harry’s 2023 memoir, Spare, contradicted the statement’s sentiment.
The memoir claimed Prince William called Meghan “difficult,” “rude” and “abrasive” following a disagreement in 2019 – after Prince Harry and Meghan had wed.

In a follow up interview, Prince Harry clarified to ITV News: “[Prince William] never tried to dissuade me from marrying Megan, but he aired some concerns, very early on and said, you know, this is gonna be really hard for you. And I still to this day, I don’t truly understand which part of what he was talking about.”
Meghan and Prince Harry wed at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on May 19, 2018. The combination of curiosity, speculations, Meghan’s Hollywood friends and being a major royal event, the \ceremony became the most-watched royal wedding in the world.
Among the attendees were Serena Williams, George Clooney, and some of Meghan’s Suit’s co-stars including Sarah Rafferty, Patrick J. Adams, and Gabriel Macht,
Almost two years later on January 8, 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their royal exit.
