Queen Mary is the first Australian-born monarch in the world. The Tasmanian-born royal became Queen in but we’ve been following her story from when she married her prince, King Frederik in 2004.
Since 2004, Queen Mary has graced the cover of The Australian Women’s Weekly. With her royal tour taking her Down Under in 2026, we’re revisting all the stunning covers to feature the Danish Queen.
June 2004, Royal Wedding Souvenir
To celebrate the royal nuptials, then-Crown Princess Mary was on the cover of The Weekly.
The story of a Tassie woman meeting and falling in love with a Prince caught the hearts and minds of romance lovers around the world. Discover some of the fairytale moments of their romance here.
October 2004: Inside the Palace
We see inside the Royal Palaces for the first time, and how then-Crown Prince Frederik and his wife, then-Crown Princess Mary, were modernising the space with modern art and furnishings.
March, 2005, World Exclusive
Our first global exclusive with then-Crown Princess Mary! She shares what it is really like to be a Princess, plus there were some official photographs in this issue as well.
November, 2005: Royal baby!
The then-Crown Prince and Princess welcomed their first child, Prince Christian! This issue contained souvenir photos of the baby Prince. The Prince is no longer a baby, and has even taken on official duties while his parents were away.
September, 2006
Queen Mary was also the cover of the September 2006 issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly. The story was that she had to keep her baby plans on hold. However, we know they weren’t on hold for long as Princess Isabella and her twins came along a few years later!

April, 2009
In this special edition of The Weekly, we were again granted an interview with Her Royal Highness. She spoke candidly about her first five years as a wife and mother, and also as a royal in the public eye.
March 2012, exclusive interview

October 2013, 80th Birthday Celebration
Inthis very special issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly, we celebrate our 80th birthday. Our team also travelled to Copenhagen to style the Royal in Australian gowns and interview her in person for a global exclusive.
In this historic feature, the Crown Princess shared that “part of me will always be Australian”

In this Royal Special Issue, we were again granted exclusive access behind the palace gates to speak to then-Crown Princess Mary. Also in this issue, we meet Prince Archie for the first time!
November, 2020
The Crown Prince Couple graced the cover of The Weekly in this very candid shot. The two appear to be a regular couple…until you remember that they went on to be the King and Queen of Denmark!
February, 2022
We celebrated the then-Crown Princess’s 50th birthday with a deep dive into the photo archive, surfacing never-before-seen photos of the Australian-Danish Royal.
October 2022
To celebrate our 90th anniversary issue, Queen Mary was also on the cover of The Weekly in a stunning sequinced gown. Her fashion has always been a keen focus for royalists, with her outfits usually telling a story.
February, 2024, Special Royal Souvenir Issue
Mary becomes Queen! After Queen Margrethe II abdicated, King Frederik and Queen Mary were proclaimed monarchs of Denmark.
