Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton are playing a ruthless game of cat and mouse for their upcoming movie Apex, filmed in Australia’s own wilderness.
Apex isn’t the first action thriller to take to our rugged landscape, and the number is growing; from Mad Max, Eric Bana’s The Dry, and Tomorrow, When The War Begins.
Only Australia could look so beautiful yet deadly on-screen.
With Apex releasing to Netflix on April 24, 2026, The Weekly is detailing all the wonderful filming locations below and more.
Where is Apex filmed?
The thriller is primarily filmed in the Blue Mountains, particularly the Grand Canyon waking track, just a 90 minute drive away from Sydney, New South Wales.
Other locations include The Needles in Engadine, NSW and a post office in Bowning. Crw then headed towards the ACT and NSW border to film in Ginninderra Falls in Wallaroo.
Apex director Baltasar Kormákur revealed why no other place in the world rivaled the Blue Mountains.
“For a film like Apex — where the elements and the terrain are characters that loom just as large as the movie stars battling in it — no other country in the world could have taken the place of Australia as our primary location,” he told Tudum.
“The unrivaled landscape, studio facilities, and talented crews in New South Wales have been a boon to this production. I want to thank the people of NSW, the NSW government, and the Australian Government’s Location Offset for all the support we’ve received in making this journey possible.”
What is Apex about?
South-African actor Charlize Theron portrays Sasha, a grieving woman who seeks peace in the wilderness. She’s expecting hikes, kayaking and mindfulness – until she become prey to a serial killer. This vicious serial killer is Ben, played by Welsh actor Taron Egerton.
For him, its an exciting game. But for her, it’s do or die.
