Meghan Markle has reportedly been dropped from an acting role in the highly anticipated third season of The Gentlemen following an influx of backlash.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are speculated to make an unexpected return to the UK with their two children, Archie and Lilibet. A move that was swiftly questioned, causing outcry and inevitably, the withdrawal of Meghan’s rumoured casting.
Former editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair and royal expert Tina Brown broke the alleged news on X.
“I learned this morning that the casting of Meghan Markle in season 3 of Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen is OFF. Public backlash was too fierce,” she wrote. “This does not bode well for Meghan’s acting comeback in the UK.”
The Duchess was in discussion to join the third season, but a decision was not yet official, according to a Variety report released just days ago. The Netflix series was scheduled to film in Cotswolds, where the British media alleged the Duke and Duchess were rumoured to move to.
The Gentlemen is a hit spin-off series from the 2019 crime film of the same name, starring Matthew McConaughy and Charlie Hunnam. While the third season hasn’t officially been renewed, the second season will premiere on September 3.
This could have been Meghan’s grand return to acting, who stepped away to focus on her relationship with Prince Harry and her then-new role as a working member of the British royal family. Aside from a cameo in Close Personal Friends which is yet to release and an appearance on MasterChef Australia, Meghan’s last acting gig was as Rachel Zane in the legal drama, Suits.
Some other on-screen appearances include 90210, CSI: NY, Horrible Bosses, and Anti-Social.
In 2020, Meghan and Prince Harry signed a five-year deal with Netflix, resulting in a number of projects including With Love, Meghan. The pair re-signed a film and television deal with the streaming giant.
